The Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies (HITS) was established in January 2010 by Dr. h.c. Klaus Tschira in Heidelberg. It is a successor to the EML Research gGmbH, whose scientific agenda HITS will continue on a broader basis with more research groups. Klaus Tschira, one of the founders of SAP AG, has previously, in 1995, established the Klaus Tschira Foundation (KTF), a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of scientific research and international scientific exchange. KTF is the sole shareholder in HITS and provides the necessary base financing.HITS is engaged in numerous projects funded, amongst others, by the European Union, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, DFG and by various companies.
