Opening a bank account
For your initial expenses in Germany you may use a credit card (generally accepted in department stores and in restaurants) or traveler’s cheques.

To open a bank giro account ("Girokonto") in a German bank, you may need (depending on the bank):
  • Passport
  • Visa/Residence title
  • Registration certificate ("Anmeldebestätigung") at the local administration office ("Bürgeramt")
  • Approval letter
There are some banks in Germany where you can open a bank account from abroad. Please contact the bank of your choice for more information.

Here is a selection of German banks:
  • Volks- und Raiffeisenbank
  • Sparkassen
  • Postbank
  • Commerzbank
  • Deutsche Bank
For short-term visitors it is not required to open a bank account. They will receive the money in cash.
