Opening a bank account

For your initial expenses
in Germany you may use a credit card (generally accepted in department
stores and in restaurants) or traveler’s cheques.
In order for HITS to pay your grant, it is necessary for you to open a bank account.
To open a bank giro account ("Girokonto") in a German bank, you may need (depending on the bank):- Passport
- Visa/Residence title
- Registration certificate ("Anmeldebestätigung") at the local public office ("Bürgeramt")
- Letter of acceptance (“Zulassungsbescheid”) from the university
There are some banks in Germany where you can
open a bank account from abroad. Please contact the bank of your choice
for more information.
