Two software developer positions available in the research group "Scientific Databases and Visualization" (Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies, HITS)
We are looking for two versatile, strong developers for the SDBV group at HITS. The successful candidates will be working on building and extending the core data management software for the Virtual Liver Consortium, a large scale, high profile, collaborative project funded by the German ministry of research, BMBF. The goal is to facilitate the documentation of the project, thus helping scientists in understanding their peers' work and helping outside colleagues in understanding Virtual Liver's work. Our users are systems biologists, both theoreticians and experimentalists. Our software will be built on top of an existing Ruby on Rails application (SysMO-SEEK, http://www.sysmo-db.org/demo.html) that in turn links to other software tools. The Ecosystem of software used in systems biology is diverse, so it will be necessary to use other techniques and technologies than just Ruby, such as tools from the JAVA ecosystem (Java EE, Groovy), Matlab and others. Successful candidates have a university degree and are experienced in web engineering and implementation. Ideally, they are fluent in a convention-over-configuration framework or alternatively in Spring, Spring MVC or J2EE 5. The Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies (HITS gGmbH) is a private non-profit research laboratory dedicated to data- and computing-intensive research. The SDBV group is an interdisciplinary research group that develops concepts in the area of biological databases and maintains the reaction-kinetic database SABIO-RK.

Predoctoral scholarship in the Molecular and Cellular Modeling group at the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies (HITS) in Heidelberg, Germany
We are seeking a highly motivated scientist to join the Molecular and Cellular Modeling group at HITS for their doctoral studies starting July 2010. The research project will involve computational modelling and simulation of protein interactions.
HITS gGmbH is a private non-profit research laboratory dedicated to basic and applied research, with a strong emphasis on computational biology. The Molecular and Cellular Modeling group is an interdisciplinary research group that works on the development and application of computer-aided methods to predict and simulate biomolecular interactions. The focus is on proteins and the computational approaches are mostly based on the three-dimensional structures of macromolecules. Techniques cover a wide spectrum from interactive, web-based visualization tools to molecular and Brownian dynamics simulations (see http://www.h-its.org; http://projects.villa-bosch.de/mcm). Candidates should possess a Masters degree or equivalent qualification in biophysics or a related discipline. Experience in biomolecular modeling and simulation, as well as programming, is highly desirable. A strong interest in interdisciplinary research is essential.
