SUMMARY:HITS Public Talk - Monika Mondal: The catch 22 of science & development
DESCRIPTION:by Monika Mondal\, 2026 HITS Journalist in Residence \n  \nIn the developing world\, science is often presented as a ladder to social and economic upliftment. Like many Indians\, Monika Mondal\, trained as an engineer\, climbed that ladder\, only to realize that ladder is leaning against the wrong wall. Seeking a more meaningful path\, she embarked on a quest to understand: Why is the world the way it is? \nAs an independent journalist\, Mondal spent years investigating questions of the modern times — from biofuels to genetically modified crops\, from pollution caused by industrial giants\, to the elimination of daily problems — müll\, monkeys\, mosquitoes and money.  \nHer reporting took her to places where solutions were proposed — from the negotiation rooms of UN climate summits to regional discussions on renewables\, circular economy etc. Everywhere\, one phrase echoed: „Scientific Thinking.“ \nBut what does that truly mean in a fractured world? Tracing the trajectory of science from the Enlightenment to today\, this talk interrogates the narrative of modern development. It asks: Can science become a genuine tool of liberation—and if so\, how? \n  \nMonika Mondal\, the 2026 HITS Journalist in Residence\,  is an award-winning freelance reporter from Delhi\, India. She holds degrees in electronics\, communication engineering\, and development studies\, and has reported on topics ranging from life sciences to astronomy for publications including Nature\, Wired\, The Guardian\, and The Hindu. Mondal has received accolades such as a Pulitzer Center fellowship\, the Alexander-von-Humboldt Chancellor’s Fellowship\, and the Thomson Foundation Journalist Award.\nThe Journalist in Residence program at HITS\, established in 2012\, invites experienced science journalists for three- to six-month residencies to collaborate with researchers\, attend conferences\, and pursue independent projects. To date\, fourteen journalists from Canada\, the U.S.\, Australia\, India\, Spain and Germany have been awarded the HITS fellowship. \n  \nREGISTRATION: \n\nThe talk will be hybrid.\n\n\nIf you would like to participate online\, please register in advance here.\n\n\n\nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn case you are not able to attend\, you can watch the talk afterwards on the HITS YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/TheHITSters.

SUMMARY:HITS Colloquium Alexander Mäder: Flooding the zone with AI - brauchen wir noch Menschen in der Wissenschaftskommunikation?
DESCRIPTION:  \nBy Alexander Mäder\, Hochschule der Medien\, Stuttgart \n  \nFlooding the zone with AI? The role of humans in science communication \nWhile AI-generated content is getting better and better\, communication experts wonder what jobs will be left for them in the end. They can’t be sure that there’s a limit to what AI can do. But there is one task that cannot be automated: someone needs to take on responsibility for what is published. That may not seem like much\, but it’s a start – and it means that this someone has to decide what’s interesting\, relevant\, and important for a given audience. If we allow AI to publish by itself and then ask it to filter the publications for us\, we only have ourselves to blame. \n  \nREGISTRATION: \nThe talk will be hybrid.\n\nIf you would like to participate online\, please register in advance here.\n\n\n\nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.\n\n\nIn case you are not able to attend\, you can watch the talk afterwards on the HITS YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/TheHITSters.

SUMMARY:IWR\, EllIS\, SIMPLAIX - Joint Colloquium - Gábor Csányi: MACE Force Field Models for the Periodic Table
DESCRIPTION:  \nby Gábor Csányi \nDirector Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research (MPI-P) \n  \nI will report on our latest efforts to create universally applicable machine learning force fields using the MACE architecture. Large publicly available databases (such as OMAT and OMOL) and large scale GPU compute allow the construction of force field models that cover most of the periodic table and are suitable out of the box for exploration tasks\, and in some cases (e.g. organic molecules) for accurate production level simulations. Fine tuning material models with very little effort yields near-DFT accuracy. The latest models\, such as MACE-POLAR-1 include electrostatic interactions with some notion of self-consistency. \n  \nThis colloquium is jointly organized by ELLIS\, SIMPLAIX & IWR. \n  \nThe colloquium will take place at: \nMathematikon Heidelberg\nConference Room 5/104\, 5th Floor\nIm Neuenheimer Feld 205\n69120 Heidelberg
