Er hat die bislang gr\u00f6\u00dften und umfassendsten Computersimulationen des Universums konzipiert und durchgef\u00fchrt: die Millennium-Simulation 2005, die \u201eIllustris\u201c-Simulation 2014 und die \u201eIllustris TNG\u201c-Simulation 2018. Die Forschungsgruppe \u201eTheoretische Astrophysik\u201c des HITS leitete er seit M\u00e4rz 2010, zugleich wurde er damals als Professor f\u00fcr Theoretische Astrophysik an die Universit\u00e4t Heidelberg berufen. Am HITS verfeinerte er unter anderem den von ihm entwickelten \u201eArepo\u201c-Code und erm\u00f6glichte es dadurch, die vielf\u00e4ltigen Formen und Gr\u00f6\u00dfen von Galaxien mit Supercomputern zu simulieren.
