More than 50 participants from Europe, North and South America discussed how methods from different disciplines, such as mathematics, electrical engineering, economics and operations research can help us tackle the many challenges facing our energy systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keynote speakers were: <a href=\"https:\/\/ece.uwaterloo.ca\/~ccanizar\/claudio.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prof. Claudio Canizares<\/a>, University of Waterloo \/ Canada, talking about energy management systems for local and small grids; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scai.fraunhofer.de\/en\/business-research-areas\/high-performance-analytics.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Tanja Clees<\/a>, Fraunhofer Institute SCAI, St. Augustine, who presented&nbsp; a system for simulation, analysis and optimization of energy networks; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ieor.berkeley.edu\/~oren\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prof. Shmuel S. Oren,<\/a> UCLA Berkeley \/ USA, who focused on smart markets for smart electricity grid.<br>The Symposium was initiated by a consortium including partners from HITS, Heidelberg University and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) working together within the research project \u201cNew Approaches to Integrated Energy Systems and Grid Modeling\u201d funded by the DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The symposium organizers were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iip.kit.edu\/english\/86_94.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prof. Wolf Fichtner<\/a> (KIT), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.h-its.org\/de\/research\/dmq\/people\/prof-dr-vincent-heuveline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prof. Vincent Heuveline<\/a> (Heidelberg University\/ HITS),&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ieh.kit.edu\/mitarbeiter_leibfried.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prof. Thomas Leibfried<\/a> (KIT), Dr. Valentin Bertsch&nbsp; (KIT), Dr. Michael Schick (HITS), Philipp Gerstner (HITS), and Dr. Michael Suriyah (KIT).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image dt-single-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><a class=\"dt-single-image\" href=\"https:\/\/www.h-its.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/DSC_0012_sm.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.h-its.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/DSC_0012_sm-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"Vincent Heuveline, Heidelberg University \/HITS (left), Claudio Canizares, University of Waterloo \/ Canada (right).
