{"id":15653,"date":"2017-05-05T08:39:36","date_gmt":"2017-05-05T06:39:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.h-its.org\/?p=15653"},"modified":"2019-09-24T11:40:22","modified_gmt":"2019-09-24T09:40:22","slug":"julich-supercomputing-center-grant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.h-its.org\/de\/2017\/05\/05\/julich-supercomputing-center-grant\/","title":{"rendered":"J\u00fclich Supercomputing Centre grants 27 million core hours for Multidimensional Hydrodynamic Simulations of Stars"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>For simulations of physical processes in stars in the framework of project HWB07 &#8222;Multidimensional Hydrodynamic Simulations of Stars&#8220;, the PSO group was awarded 27 million core hours on the JUQUEEN supercomputer at J\u00fclich Supercomputing Centre (Forschungszentrum J\u00fclich). These resources, allocated for May 2017 to April 2018, will be used to perform simulations of convective burning processes and dynamical shear instabilities in stars with the Seven-League Hydro code developed by the PSO group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Conventional stellar evolution calculations cover the entire lives of stars and are too challenging to be performed in a detailed multidimensional hydrodynamic treatment with current computational resources and methods. The goal of project HWB07 is therefore to perform such detailed simulations for shorter phases and isolated processes that are critical for the further evolution. Such simulations are still extremely demanding and require substantial amounts of computer time as well as innovative modeling approaches.
