Der Astrophysiker untersucht das turbulente Leben massereicher Doppelsterne und deren explosive Endphasen. F\u00fcr seine Forschungsleistung wurde er vom Europ\u00e4ischen Forschungsrat (ERC) mit einem Starting Grant ausgezeichnet. F\u00fcr die Astrophysik sind besonders die sogenannten massereichen Sterne interessant, die als kosmische Kraftwerke in spektakul\u00e4ren Supernovae explodieren und einige der exotischsten Formen von Materie hinterlassen: Neutronensterne und Schwarze L\u00f6cher. Obwohl mittlerweile sogar Verschmelzungen dieser kompakten Objekte beobachtet werden k\u00f6nnen, bleiben nach wie vor viele Fragen offen. <br>Der Astrophysiker <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.h-its.org\/de\/people\/dr-fabian-schneider\/\" target=\"_blank\">Fabian Schneider <\/a>befasst sich intensiv mit dem turbulenten Leben und Schicksal massereicher Sterne. Seit Januar 2021 ist er Leiter der <a href=\"https:\/\/www.h-its.org\/de\/forschung\/stellar-evolution-theory-set\/\">neuen For<\/a><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.h-its.org\/de\/forschung\/stellar-evolution-theory-set\/\" target=\"_blank\">s<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.h-its.org\/de\/forschung\/stellar-evolution-theory-set\/\">chungsgruppe \u201eStellar Evolution Theory\u201c (SET)<\/a> am Heidelberger Institut f\u00fcr Theoretische Studien (HITS). Er hatte sich beim Europ\u00e4ischen Forschungsrat erfolgreich um einen ERC Starting Grant beworben und baut mit Mitteln in H\u00f6he von 1,5 Millionen Euro seine eigene Juniorgruppe auf. Am HITS arbeiten nun insgesamt 13 Gruppen, darunter vier mit astronomischen Forschungsthemen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Von Bonn \u00fcber Oxford nach Heidelberg<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fabian Schneider studierte Physik an der Universit\u00e4t Bonn und promovierte 2015 am Argelander-Institut f\u00fcr Astronomie. Danach wechselte er als \u201eHintze Fellow\u201c an die Universit\u00e4t Oxford, wo er zu massereichen Sternen, deren Magnetfeldern und zu Supernovae forschte. In dieser Zeit begann die Kooperation mit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.h-its.org\/de\/people\/prof-dr-friedrich-ropke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Friedrich R\u00f6pke<\/a> am HITS, die sich mit seinem Wechsel nach Heidelberg 2018 noch intensivierte: Er wurde \u201eGliese Fellow\u201c am Zentrum f\u00fcr Astronomie der Universit\u00e4t Heidelberg und arbeitete zugleich am HITS als Gastwissenschaftler in der <a href=\"https:\/\/www.h-its.org\/de\/forschung\/pso\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PSO-Gruppe<\/a>. Zusammen mit Kollegen aus Garching und Oxford ver\u00f6ffentlichte Fabian Schneider im Oktober 2019 eine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.h-its.org\/de\/2019\/10\/09\/magnetars-de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Studie zur Entstehung von Magnetfeldern<\/a> bei der Verschmelzung von Sternen im Fachjournal \u201eNature\u201c. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.h-its.org\/de\/2020\/09\/07\/erc-starting-grant-fabian-schneider\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2020 erhielt er dann einen ERC Starting Grant<\/a> des Europ\u00e4ischen Forschungsrats und entschied sich, seine neue Gruppe am HITS anzusiedeln.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Wenn Sternpaare miteinander verschmelzen<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Die neue SET-Forschungsgruppe konzentriert sich besonders auf Doppelsterne. Sie bilden die \u00fcberwiegende Mehrheit aller massereichen Sterne. W\u00e4hrend ihres Lebens k\u00f6nnen die beiden Sterne Teile ihrer jeweiligen Masse austauschen. Dadurch ver\u00e4ndert sich auch die Entwicklung des einzelnen Sterns nachhaltig. Aufgrund dieses Austausches kann beispielsweise ein Stern am Ende seines Lebens in einer Supernova explodieren und zum Neutronenstern werden, anstatt in ein Schwarzes Loch zu kollabieren.
