Gemeinsam mit Kolleg*innen der Universit\u00e4t Heidelberg und des Karlsruher Instituts f\u00fcr Technologie (KIT) befassen sich die HITS-Forschenden mit Herausforderungen bei der Simulation von Biomolek\u00fclen und molekularen Materialien, indem sie ihr Know\u2011How in Computersimulationen auf mehreren Skalen und auf dem Gebiet des Maschinellen Lernens b\u00fcndeln. Die Kooperation wurde 2021 ins Leben gerufen und ist jetzt nach einer erfolgreichen Evaluierung in ihre zweite Phase getreten, mit dem Max-Planck-Institut f\u00fcr Polymerforschung (MPIP) als neuem Partner. Diese haben die moderne Wissenschaft und Technologie revolutioniert. Die Wissenschaft kommt jedoch an ihre Grenzen, wenn sie die unendlich komplexen und variablen Strukturen und Eigenschaften molekularer Systeme auf unterschiedlichen Skalen, also vom Nano- bis zu Mikrometerbereich, abbilden, erforschen und analysieren will. Hier bieten datengesteuerte und maschinelle Lernmethoden einen vielversprechenden Ansatz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deshalb haben das Heidelberger Institut f\u00fcr Theoretische Studien (HITS), die Universit\u00e4t Heidelberg und das Karlsruher Institut f\u00fcr Technologie (KIT) 2021 die SIMPLAIX\u2011Kooperation ins Leben gerufen. Sie b\u00fcndeln die Expertise der drei Partnerinstitutionen, und gehen die Herausforderung, unterschiedliche Skalen bei der Simulation von Biomolek\u00fclen und molekularen Materialien zu \u00fcberbr\u00fccken, durch Multiskalensimulation und maschinelles Lernen an. In den ersten Jahren der Initiative gab es, neben kooperativen Forschungsprojekten, gut besuchte internationale Workshops, zahlreiche interne Besprechungen sowie eine beachtliche Zahl von Publikationen und mehrere Auszeichnungen f\u00fcr SIMPLAIX-Forschende, unter anderem ein ERC Advanced Grant und ein DFG Heinz-Maier-Leibnitz-Preis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nach einer erfolgreichen Evaluation hat SIMPLAIX die zweite Phase gestartet und begr\u00fc\u00dft einen neuen assoziierten Partner: Das Max-Planck-Institut f\u00fcr Polymerforschung (MPIP) in Mainz. Mit 10 leitenden Forschenden (Principal Investigators, PIs) und 8 Projekten setzt die Initiative die interdisziplin\u00e4re und interinstitutionelle wissenschaftliche Zusammenarbeit fort und erweitert sie in den neuen Forschungsprojekten. Zus\u00e4tzlich wird die erfolgreiche SIMPLAIX\u2011Workshop\u2011Reihe im Mai 2026 fortgef\u00fchrt. Der diesj\u00e4hrige Workshop wird gemeinsam mit RTG 2450 organisiert, einer von der DFG gef\u00f6rderten Graduiertenschule am KIT.
