Der Chemiker kam mit einem Forschungsstipendium der Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung f\u00fcr erfahrene Wissenschaftler nach Heidelberg. Es erm\u00f6glicht Forschern, ein selbst gew\u00e4hltes langfristiges Vorhaben in Kooperation mit einem selbst gew\u00e4hlten wissenschaftlichen Gastgeber an einer Forschungseinrichtung in Deutschland durchzuf\u00fchren.<br>Dr. Henchman forscht acht Monate lang am HITS und besch\u00e4ftigt sich dabei mit der Frage, welche Faktoren f\u00fcr die Stabilit\u00e4t von Proteinen bestimmend sind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Proteine sind in hohem Ma\u00dfe verantwortlich daf\u00fcr, dass Leben funktioniert. Und doch ranken sich immer noch viele R\u00e4tsel um die Frage, wie Proteine arbeiten und wie sie im Aufbau ver\u00e4ndert werden k\u00f6nnen, um n\u00fctzliche Funktionen auszu\u00fcben. Mit seiner Forschung will Richard Henchman dazu beitragen, dass wir die Faktoren der Proteinstabilit\u00e4t besser verstehen. Da Proteine st\u00e4ndig Form und Ort wechseln, ist diese Aufgabe nicht leicht. Ein wichtiger Beitrag zur Stabilit\u00e4t ist es, die Gesamtanzahl der M\u00f6glichkeiten zu berechnen, in der sich alle Molek\u00fcle anordnen k\u00f6nnen, sowohl Proteine als auch das w\u00e4ssrige Zellplasma, in dem sie schwimmen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>W\u00e4hrend seines Aufenthalts am HITS wird Richard Henchman am Computer eine neue Theorie entwickeln, um diese Frage f\u00fcr Proteine zu beantworten. Er verl\u00e4sst sich dabei zum einen auf die Expertise seiner Kooperationsparterin Frauke Gr\u00e4ter auf dem Gebiet der Proteinstabilit\u00e4t bei mechanischer Kraftanwendung.
