By Prof. Dr. Jørgen Ellegaard Andersen, Centre for Quantum Geometry of Moduli Spaces, Department of Mathematics, Aarhus University, Denmark

In pure mathematics “Quantum Geometry of Moduli Spaces” refers to the study of topology, geometry and quantisation of moduli spaces. Moduli spaces are in many cases spaces of solutions to (classical) equations (of motions) modulo symmetries and the quantisation of certain field theories in physics reduced to aspect of the topology, the geometry and the quantisation of corresponding moduli spaces. The talk will focus on the examples of (complex) quantum Chern-Simons theories, which illustrated these aspects very well and one see this very fruitful interplay between quantum field theory and string theory on the physics side and then classical and brand new results concerned with the theory of moduli space, involving deep and advanced pure mathematics. The talk will towards the end turn to a recent further twist on this story, where a confluence of these ideas from quantum geometry of moduli spaces have seen their application also in the study and prediction of the folding of such macro-molecules as RNA and proteins in molecular biology.
