New Shapes, New Materials and New Processes
The borderlines between virtual and physical forms dissolve and allow unprecedented transitions in both directions. New 3D scanners provide insight on various length scales and unveil an increasingly larger variety of geometric forms in nature. New 3D fabrication technologies produce physical shapes with a variety of new materials and of new internal structures. Few is yet understood. The mathematical language for shapes needs to be revisited, including geometry processing and modelling technologies. The talk will show selected examples from biology, computer graphics and industrial CAD to illustrate open questions related to the novel wealth of shapes.
