SUMMARY:IWR\, ELLIS\, SIMPLAIX - Joint Colloquium - Gábor Csányi: MACE Force Field Models for the Periodic Table
DESCRIPTION:  \nby Gábor Csányi \nDirector Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research (MPI-P) \n  \nI will report on our latest efforts to create universally applicable machine learning force fields using the MACE architecture. Large publicly available databases (such as OMAT and OMOL) and large scale GPU compute allow the construction of force field models that cover most of the periodic table and are suitable out of the box for exploration tasks\, and in some cases (e.g. organic molecules) for accurate production level simulations. Fine tuning material models with very little effort yields near-DFT accuracy. The latest models\, such as MACE-POLAR-1 include electrostatic interactions with some notion of self-consistency. \n  \nThis colloquium is jointly organized by ELLIS\, SIMPLAIX & IWR. \n  \nThe colloquium will take place at: \nMathematikon Heidelberg\nConference Room 5/104\, 5th Floor\nIm Neuenheimer Feld 205\n69120 Heidelberg

SUMMARY:HITS Colloquium Alexander Mäder: Flooding the zone with AI - brauchen wir noch Menschen in der Wissenschaftskommunikation?
DESCRIPTION:  \nBy Alexander Mäder\, Hochschule der Medien\, Stuttgart \n  \nFlooding the zone with AI? The role of humans in science communication \nWhile AI-generated content is getting better and better\, communication experts wonder what jobs will be left for them in the end. They can’t be sure that there’s a limit to what AI can do. But there is one task that cannot be automated: someone needs to take on responsibility for what is published. That may not seem like much\, but it’s a start – and it means that this someone has to decide what’s interesting\, relevant\, and important for a given audience. If we allow AI to publish by itself and then ask it to filter the publications for us\, we only have ourselves to blame. \nPlease note that the talk will be in German. \n  \nREGISTRATION: \nThe talk will be hybrid.\n\nIf you would like to participate online\, please register in advance here.\n\n\n\nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.\n\n\nIn case you are not able to attend\, you can watch the talk afterwards on the HITS YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/TheHITSters.

SUMMARY:HITS Public Talk - Monika Mondal: The catch 22 of science & development
DESCRIPTION:by Monika Mondal\, 2026 HITS Journalist in Residence \n  \nIn the developing world\, science is often presented as a ladder to social and economic upliftment. Like many Indians\, Monika Mondal\, trained as an engineer\, climbed that ladder\, only to realize that ladder is leaning against the wrong wall. Seeking a more meaningful path\, she embarked on a quest to understand: Why is the world the way it is? \nAs an independent journalist\, Mondal spent years investigating questions of the modern times — from biofuels to genetically modified crops\, from pollution caused by industrial giants\, to the elimination of daily problems — müll\, monkeys\, mosquitoes and money.  \nHer reporting took her to places where solutions were proposed — from the negotiation rooms of UN climate summits to regional discussions on renewables\, circular economy etc. Everywhere\, one phrase echoed: “Scientific Thinking.” \nBut what does that truly mean in a fractured world? Tracing the trajectory of science from the Enlightenment to today\, this talk interrogates the narrative of modern development. It asks: Can science become a genuine tool of liberation—and if so\, how? \n  \nMonika Mondal\, the 2026 HITS Journalist in Residence\,  is an award-winning freelance reporter from Delhi\, India. She holds degrees in electronics\, communication engineering\, and development studies\, and has reported on topics ranging from life sciences to astronomy for publications including Nature\, Wired\, The Guardian\, and The Hindu. Mondal has received accolades such as a Pulitzer Center fellowship\, the Alexander-von-Humboldt Chancellor’s Fellowship\, and the Thomson Foundation Journalist Award.\nThe Journalist in Residence program at HITS\, established in 2012\, invites experienced science journalists for three- to six-month residencies to collaborate with researchers\, attend conferences\, and pursue independent projects. To date\, fourteen journalists from Canada\, the U.S.\, Australia\, India\, Spain and Germany have been awarded the HITS fellowship. \n  \nREGISTRATION: \nThe talk will be hybrid.\n\n\nIf you would like to participate online\, please register in advance here.\n\n\n\nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.\n\n\n\nIn case you are not able to attend\, you can watch the talk afterwards on the HITS YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/TheHITSters.

SUMMARY:HITS-SIMPLAIX Joint Colloquium Rommie Amaro: Multiscale Computational Microscopy for In Situ Molecular Dynamics
DESCRIPTION:  \nBy Rommie Amaro\, \nEndowed Chair\, Distinguished Professorship in Theoretical and Computational Chemistry\, Department of Molecular Biology\, UC San Diego\, USA \n  \nAdvances in multiscale computational microscopy are transforming our ability to visualize and understand biomolecular systems in their native contexts. In this talk\, I will highlight recent progress in in situ molecular dynamics (MD)\, where data-integrated simulations reveal how cellular environments reshape protein structure\, cryptic site accessibility\, and viral vulnerability. By bridging many different kinds of biological datasets and large-scale physics-based modeling\, we can now construct mesoscale digital twins of enveloped viruses and respiratory aerosols at unprecedented resolution\, from individual glycoprotein motions to billion-atom droplets. These simulations uncover how crowded\, chemically complex microenvironments modulate diffusion\, aggregation\, and interactions among mucins\, albumin\, viral spike proteins\, and lipids—yielding new insights into airborne infectivity and viral resilience. Together\, these efforts illustrate the power of in situ MD to reveal the hidden dynamics governing pathogens\, proteins\, and their environments\, opening new avenues for therapeutic design and predictive biological modeling. \n  \n  \nREGISTRATION: \nThe talk will be hybrid.\n\nIf you would like to participate online\, please register in advance here.\n\n\n\nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.\n\n\nIn case you are not able to attend\, you can watch the talk afterwards on the HITS YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/TheHITSters.

SUMMARY:HITS Colloquium Raphael Hirschi: Predicting the Impact of Massive Stars in the Universe and how to Store Renewable Energy From the Sun on Earth
DESCRIPTION:  \nBy Raphael Hirschi\, Klaus Tschira Guest Professor\nAstrophysics Research Centre\, School of Chemical and Physical Sciences\, Keele University\, UK \n  \nIn this colloquium\, I will start by briefly reviewing the importance of stars in the Universe. I will then discuss how we can re-create stars on computers using a range of simulations using a few hours on a laptop to months on supercomputers. I will explain how these simulations help us understand and predict the structure\, fate and impact of massive stars. In particular\, I will present recent work studying how mass and rotation affect their fate across cosmic times and compare the predicted black-hole mass distribution to the latest gravitational waves detections from the LKV collaboration. I will then introduce the 321D (3 to 1-dimension) loop\, a framework to improve 1D stellar evolution models using very detailed 3D hydrodynamic simulations. I will end by briefly presenting my research on using batteries and hydrogen to store renewable energy in order to minimise our energy bills and carbon footprint. \n  \nA Short Biography \nRaphael Hirschi is the 2025 Klaus Tschira Guest Professor at HITS. \nRaphael completed a MSc in physics at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in 1999 and a PhD in Astrophysics at the Observatoire de Genève in 2004. He studies the evolution\, fate and impact of stars. Stars play a key role in the Universe through the light they shine\, their kinetic feedback via winds and supernovae and the chemical elements they produce. They are complex objects involving many physical processes: turbulence (convection)\, interaction of rotation and magnetic fields and nuclear reactions. Ideally\, we would like to model the structure and evolution of stars using three-dimensional (3D) magneto-hydrodynamics simulations. The large spread in length scales and the lifetime of stars being many orders of magnitude longer than the convective timescale\, however\, implies that we need to model the global evolution of stars using one-dimensional (1D) stellar evolution models. During his PhD\, he improved 1D models to study the impact of rotation on the late phases of the evolution of massive stars. He then went to the Universität Basel as a postdoctoral fellow to determine the comprehensive nucleosynthesis taking place in massive stars\, in particular the so-called weak s process. Since joining Keele University in 2007\, major highlights of his research have been the determination of the mass and fate of the most massive stars known to date\, explaining unique abundances in the early Universe and the setting-up and leading of large projects (ERC starting grant for SHYNE project 2012-2017) and collaborations (NUGRID\, BRIDGCE\, ChETEC COST Action). The goal of his theoretical research is to link major nuclear physics experiments to large astronomical observing programmes\, 3D hydrodynamics simulations to 1D stellar models and theoretical stellar astrophysics to the high-performance computing industry. He also recently started research on energy storage (hydrogen and batteries) for a sustainable future.

SUMMARY:HITS-SIMPLAIX Joint Colloquium Massimiliano Bonomi: Structural and Dynamic Biology with Integrative Approaches
DESCRIPTION:By Massimiliano Bonomi\, Institut Pasteur\, Paris\, France \nUnderstanding the molecular mechanisms by which biological systems carry out their functions is often essential for the rational targeting of associated diseases. In many cases\, determining the three-\ndimensional (3D) structure of these systems provides valuable insights. However\, it is often the interplay between structural and dynamical properties that determines the behavior of complex systems. While both\nexperimental and computational methods are invaluable for studying protein structure and dynamics\, the limitations of each individual technique can hinder their capabilities [1].\nHere\, I present our lab’s work on developing integrative computational-experimental approaches that combine experimental data with molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to determine accurate protein structural ensembles of biological systems [2\,3]. I will showcase the capabilities of these methods through various applications to systems of significant interest. First\, I will demonstrate how accurate protein structural ensembles can be obtained from 3D cryo-electron microscopy maps using our recently developed EMMIVox approach [4]. Then\, I will highlight how we characterize the structural and dynamic properties of the CyaA toxin by integrating coarse-grained MD simulations with Hydrogen/Deuterium eXchange Mass Spectrometry (HDX-MS)\, Small-Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS)\, and 2D single-particle cryo-EM data.\nFinally\, I will show how structural information provided by Artificial Intelligence approaches\, such as AlphaFold\, can be synergistically combined with low-resolution experimental data to generate accurate\nmodels of protein complexes. \nReferences:\n[1] M. SUMMARY:Science\, Fiction: Uncovering Research Misconduct Without Eroding Trust
DESCRIPTION:From accusations of plagiarism against Harvard’s former president to the case of Stanford’s Marc Tessier-Lavigne and over to the horrific case of Paolo Macchiarini’s plastic windpipes — scientific misconduct has exploded into the public eye in recent years. How can scientists and journalists cover such cases without undermining trust in the scientific process and our research institutions? \nOver the past five years\, Jackson Ryan\, HITS Journalist in Residence 2025\, has been investigating cases of research misconduct at Australian universities\, coming face to face with the problems in managing and investigating breaches. Along the way\, he’s learned some hard lessons about trust\, transparency and the critical role watchdog journalists play in improving scientific practice. \nLocation: Mathematikon • Conference Room\, Room 5/104\, 5th Floor • Im Neuenheimer Feld 205 • 69120 Heidelberg \nMore about Jackson Ryan: https://www.jacksonwryan.com/

SUMMARY:HITS Colloquium Christina Elmer: Synthetic Truthfulness? Learning Systems as a Challenge for Communication and a Transformative Force for Journalism
DESCRIPTION:  \nBy Christina Elmer\, Institute & School of Journalism\, TU Dortmund University \n  \nAI systems are both promising and unsettling for quality journalism. On the one hand\, they open up completely new possibilities – for investigating large amounts of data\, utilizing knowledge resources and creating even more efficient workflows. At the same time\, they jeopardize trust in journalistic content. If AI systems write just as eloquently as humans and generate multimedia content whose AI origins are barely recognizable – how will media companies be able to sustain against such competition? \nThe talk outlines the current status of the integration of AI systems in media organizations and uses specific use cases to demonstrate the challenges to be overcome. One focus lies on the perception of media contents in whose creation artificial intelligence was involved\, and research results on meaningful labeling approaches. Finally\, future scenarios show the transformation that journalism still needs to undergo in order to survive in an AI-mediated information ecosystem and to continue to serve a well-informed society. \n  \nA Short Biography \nFrom September 2021\, Christina Elmer is Professor for Digital Journalism and Data Journalism at TU Dortmund University. Previously she was deputy head of editorial development at Der Spiegel\, where she had co-managed the relaunch of the digital platform and established the data journalism department. During a research sabbatical in 2021 as the first Journalist in Residence at the Cyber Valley research network\, she investigated the explainability of AI methods. Before she joined Spiegel Online as a science editor in 2013\, Elmer worked at Stern magazine’s investigative unit. Her journalistic career began in 2007 at the German press agency dpa\, where she was part of a team which set up Germany’s first department for data journalism and computer assisted reporting. Elmer studied Journalism and Biology. She is a shareholder of the human rights organization Algorithm Watch and a board member of Netzwerk Recherche\, Germany’s largest association supporting investigative reporters.

SUMMARY:HITS Colloquium Victoria Stodden: Verifying Correctness in AI-enabled Scientific Research - a New Frontier
DESCRIPTION:By Victoria Stodden\, Daniel J. Epstein Department of Industrial & Systems Engineering\, University of Southern California\, USA \nIn the last 10 years colossal cloud infrastructure investments behind the rise of near-ubiquitous global mobile technologies have trickled down to scientific research through innovative infrastructure including cloud compute and storage\, I/O tools\, data analysis and modeling frameworks\, which in turn have generated broad and expanding communities of users and supporters. Arguably\, the recent success of Large Language Models were catalyzed by the resulting technological innovations of 1) open and accessible massive data\, and 2) re-executable discovery pipelines for model estimation and prediction. These changes are deeply disruptive to the research community since they open new paths to knowledge creation that were previously inaccessible and largely culturally unknown.\nThe scientific community is faced with the challenge of responding to changes in research modalities due to these technological innovations. Research is now conducted as an “Olympics” of benchmarked competitions between machine learning models leveraged by the opaque results of Large Language Models\, access to massive data\, and redeployment of complex scientific discovery workflows. In this Colloquium talk I provide a roadmap of challenges and responses by various stakeholders in the research community to ensure that scientific results remain reliable and reproducible\, and secure within a position of trust in the broader society. \nA Short Biography \nVICTORIA STODDEN is Associate Professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Southern California. \nShe received a Ph.D. in Statistics from Stanford University and a Law Degree from Stanford Law School. She graduated magna cum laude with her Bachelor’s in Economics from the University of Ottawa and holds a master’s degree in Economics from the University of British Columbia. She held the Kauffman Innovation fellowship at Yale Law School and was a Berkman Klein fellow at Harvard Law School. She was a postdoctoral researcher at MIT and has held faculty positions at the University of California Berkeley\, Columbia University\, and a tenured position at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. \nStodden is an internationally recognized leader in improving the reliability of scientific results in the face of increasingly sophisticated computational approaches to research: understanding when and how inferences from data are valid and reproducible\, what it means to have replicated a result\, the effect of big data and computation on scientific inference\, the design and implementation of scientific validation systems\, standards of openness and transparency for data and code sharing\, and resolving legal and policy barriers to disseminating reproducible research. \nShe has published more than 50 papers in scientific journals and conference proceedings\, and has co-edited two professional books\, published in 2014\, Privacy\, Big Data\, and the Public Good: Frameworks for Engagement\, published by Cambridge University Press and Implementing Reproducible Research\, published by Taylor & Francis. \nIn 2009 she won the Access to Knowledge Kaltura prize for her publication on legal issues in reproducible research and scientific innovation. She has served on the National Academies of Science\, Engineering\, and Medicine committees: “Reproducibility and Replication in Science” and “Fostering Research Integrity.” She co-chaired the National Science Foundation Advisory Committee for Cyberinfrastructure and was a member of the National Science Foundation Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) Advisory Committee. She has been quoted in The Economist (2013) and interviewed by publications such as Nature (2016) on reproducibility in science. \nShe also testified on scientific reproducibility before the Congressional House Committee on Science\, Space and Technology for the March 5\, 2013 hearing on Scientific Integrity & Transparency. \nShe is PI on NSF awards #1941443 EAGER: Reproducibility and Cyberinfrastructure for Computational and Data-Enabled Science\, and #1839010: EAGER: Preserve/Destroy Decisions for Simulation Data in Computational Physics and Beyond; and she is co-PI on the NSF grant #1541450: CC*DNI DIBBS: Merging Science and Cyberinfrastructure Pathways: The Whole Tale. \nHer ORCID ID is 0000-0003-2015-7825.

SUMMARY:HITS-SIMPLAIX Joint Colloquium Cecilia Clementi: Modeling Protein Dynamics with Machine Learning and Molecular Simulation
DESCRIPTION:  \nBy Cecilia Clementi\, Einstein Professor Freie Universität Berlin\, Department of Physics\, Berlin\, Germany \nThe last years have seen an immense increase in high-throughput and high-resolution technologies for experimental observation as well as high-performance techniques to simulate molecular systems at a microscopic level\, resulting in vast and ever-increasing amounts of high-dimensional data. However\, experiments provide only a partial view of macromolecular processes and are limited in their temporal and spatial resolution. On the other hand\, atomistic simulations are still not able to sample the conformation space of large complexes\, thus leaving significant gaps in our ability to study molecular processes at a biologically relevant scale. We present our efforts to bridge these gaps\, by exploiting the available data and using state-of-the-art machine-learning methods to design multiscale models for complex macromolecular systems. We show that it is possible to define simplified molecular models to reproduce the essential information contained both in microscopic simulation and experimental measurements. \n  \nShort Bio: \nProf. Dr. Cecilia Clementi is the Einstein Professor of Physics at Freie Universität Berlin since 2020\, after 19 years as a Professor of Chemistry at Rice University in Houston\, Texas\, USA. Clementi obtained her Ph.D. in Physics at SISSA\, Italy\, and was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California\, San Diego. Her research focuses on the development and application of methods for the modeling of complex biophysical processes\, by means of molecular dynamics\, statistical mechanics\, coarse-grained models\, experimental data\, and machine learning. Clementi’s research has been recognized by a US National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award (2004)\, the Robert A. Welch Foundation Norman Hackerman Award in Chemical Research (2009)\, and the Hamill Innovation Award (2007 and 2014).

SUMMARY:HITS-SIMPLAIX Joint Colloquium Markus Meuwly: Computational Protein Dynamics in the Era of Machine-Learned Atomistic Simulations
DESCRIPTION:  \nBy Markus Meuwly\, Department of Chemistry\, University of Basel\, Switzerland \n  \nMachine Learning-based techniques have the potential to fundamentally change how we approach characterizing and understanding chemical and biological materials. It is anticipated that ML applied to protein dynamics allows to carry out atomistic simulations on functionally relevant time scales using models approaching chemical accuracy. In the present seminar I will present methodological advances and their application to position-dependent spectroscopy and ligand (re-)binding reactions in small proteins with a focus on the links between simulations and experiment. Both\, opportunities and limitations of machine learning-based techniques will also be discussed.

SUMMARY:HITS Colloquium Guillermo Cabrera-Vives: Machine Learning & Astronomy: Unique Challenges for a Unique Field
DESCRIPTION:By Guillermo Cabrera-Vives\, Department of Computer Science\, Universidad de Concepción\,  Chile \nCurrently Klaus Tschira Guest Professor at HITS \n  \nAstronomy\, like many other fields\, is experiencing an explosion of data\, with vast amounts of information pouring in from the universe. This influx has driven the development of new machine learning (ML) tools\, enabling new discoveries while also presenting unique challenges. Unlike standard ML tools\, those used in astronomy must adapt to data collected from distant sources\, often captured under irregular and constrained observational conditions. In this talk\, I will discuss the different challenges of applying ML in astronomy\, including handling observational biases\, irregular time series sampling\, and the need for robust uncertainty estimation\, among others.

SUMMARY:Colloquium Volker Springel: Interfacing galaxy formation with precision cosmology
DESCRIPTION:By Volker Springel\, Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics\, Garching\, Germany\nHITS Fellow 2018 \n  \nNumerical simulations of cosmic structure formation have become a powerful tool in astrophysics. Starting right after the Big Bang\, they predict the dark matter backbone of the cosmic web far into the non-linear regime and follow complex galaxy formation physics with rapidly improving fidelity. In my talk\, I discuss extremely large simulations of the Universe and describe how they help to constrain basic cosmological parameters\, including the mass of neutrinos. They also allow us to test astrophysical hypothesis\, such as the influence of supermassive black holes on galaxy formation. Finally\, I will also discuss some of the specific computational challenges in this field. \n  \n  \nREGISTRATION: \nThe talk will be hybrid.\nIf you would like to participate online\, please register in advance here.\n\n\n\nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.\n\n\nIn case you are not able to attend\, you can watch the talk afterwards on the HITS YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/TheHITSters.\n
