Developer position in the research Group “Scientific Databases and Visualization” at HITS gGmbH, HITS-06-2019

The Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies was established 2010 by SAP co-founder Klaus Tschira (1940-2015) and the Klaus Tschira foundation as a private, non-profit research institute. HITS conducts basic research in the natural sciences, mathematics and computer science with a focus on the processing, structuring, and analyzing of large amounts of complex data and the development of computational methods and software. The research fields range from molecular biology to astrophysics.

Together with partners in Germany and abroad, the SDBV (Scientific Databases and Visualization) group at HITS builds and maintains web applications like SABIO-RK and the FAIRDOMHub that are used within the field of Systems Biology and neighboring domains. The group is looking for a flexible, science-interested software developer (m/f/d) with system administration skills.

What qualifies you for this job:

  • You have a university degree with experience in web engineering and implementation
  • Ideally, you are fluent in a convention-over-configuration framework such as Ruby on Rails or e.g. in Spring, Spring MVC or J2EE
  • You should have some Linux (self-)administration experience
  • You should be interested in interdisciplinary work and multi-site international collaboration
  • You are fluent in English

The environment of this job:

  • A project-funded full-time position for initially 2-years with the possibility for prolongation given suitable external funding
  • Collaboration with scientists with a background in biology and biochemistry, as well as of software developers with a background in computer science and related fields.
  • Highly interdisciplinary collaboration within the group and with the diverse users of our tools and services that come from a wide variety of scientific backgrounds
  • Interaction with international users, colleagues and project partners
  • Interest in interdisciplinary communication and in supporting researchers in their work by applying an agile software development approach is key, as well as pragmatism and an interest in providing usable software.
  • The SDBV group is located in the Mathematikon next to the Heidelberg University Campus
