ERC-funded Postdoc position in computational biochemistry in Heidelberg

The Molecular Biomechanics group at the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies and at Heidelberg University invites applications for a position at the postdoctoral level (m/f/d) within the ERC funded project “Mechanoradicals in Collagen”.

The MBM group is interested in how proteins respond to and sense mechanical forces. To this end, we develop and employ cutting-edge simulation techniques and complement those by biophysical experiments. A current focus is the formation and role of mechanoradicals which have been recently discovered by our team in collagen, the most abundant protein of our body.

We are looking for a highly motivated researcher to join the MBM group to push forward the development of a new scale-bridging simulation scheme for reactive Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations. The technique will combine Machine learning, kinetic Monte Carlo and Molecular Dynamics with the vision to treat chemical reactions occurring within a protein on-the-fly during MD simulations. First applications will focus on collagen mechanochemistry and will go hand in hand with experiments ongoing within the ERC project in our lab.

The successful candidate will have a doctoral degree in computational biophysics, biochemistry or related fields by the starting date and, ideally, demonstrated experience in methods development. A strong background in Molecular Dynamics simulations and/or Machine Learning is advantageous.

You will be based at the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies, where you will find first-class research environment and outstanding computational infrastructure in a beautiful green setting on the banks of the Neckar river. HITS is embedded within the vibrant Heidelberg science community. You will be formally employed at Heidelberg University (TVoeD scale).

To apply, please send by email to a 2-page summary of research interests and past research activities, a CV including a publication list, and contact details of at least two professional referees that agreed to write letters of recommendation.

The envisioned starting date is June 2021, negotiable. Initial review of applications will start on March 1, 2021 and may continue until the position is filled.
