PhD position in experimental and computational sciences for the Marie-Curie Innovative Training Network “PoLiMeR”, HITS-03-2019

The Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies was established 2010 by SAP co-founder Klaus Tschira (1940-2015) and the Klaus Tschira foundation as a private, non-profit research institute. HITS conducts basic research in the natural sciences, mathematics and computer science with a focus on the processing, structuring, and analyzing of large amounts of complex data and the development of computational methods and software. The research fields range from molecular biology to astrophysics.

We are looking for excellent, highly motivated PhD students in computer science to join our research team in the SDBV-group.

You will provide FAIR data management services to the PoLiMeR consortium based on the FAIRDOM Hub (the data sharing site hosted at HITS) and on GitLab; you will use the database generated in the PoLiMeR project together with pre-existing and public data to determine how changes in data collection, metadata quality and data feature extraction affect the information that can be found. You will seek to improve existing tools for data collection as well as querying at critical points.

This topic is particularly interesting because it provides quite general challenges (How to tailor information retrieval and information storage algorithms such that they work best in combination?); at the same time, there are *real* users to cater to. These users can help in finding out the best combination of data enrichment/search algorithm in real life, in an exciting application area: The life sciences.

Eligible candidates for a PhD position in the PoLiMeR training network should have the following qualifications:

  • A(n) (almost) completed master degree in computer science
  • Strong motivation for scientific research in an interdisciplinary and international environment
  • Excellent English presentation and writing skills
  • Good organizational and communication skills, being a team-player

Successful candidates must fulfil the criteria defined by the European Commission:

  • As an Early Stage Researcher, you have to be in the first four years of your research career and have not been awarded a doctoral degree at the time of recruitment.
  • At the time of recruitment by the host organisation, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their host organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the reference date.

The start of the PhD project is envisaged between May 2019 and September 2019. You will be employed and do the research at HITS. In addition you will be registered at the University Medical Center Groningen (NL) to obtain the PhD degree.

To apply, please enter your application via this link.
To receive full consideration, please apply till 30th of September, 2019. However, the position will remain open till it is filled. For more information about that position please contact the group leader
