Institution Classification/Type: Large Academic
Institution/Company: Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg
Department Name: Department of Physics and Astronomy
City: Heidelberg
State/Province:
Baden-Württemberg
Country: Germany

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg and the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies (HITS) invite applications for the position of a

Professor (m/f/d) in Theoretical Astrophysics

This tenured position on the German W3 level (full professor) is thematically oriented towards the field of “Computational Astrophysics”. The successful applicant will be appointed at Heidelberg University and establish a new research group at HITS.

Outstanding candidates in all areas of theoretical astrophysics with a focus on numerical modeling of astrophysical processes will be considered. We are particularly looking for expertise in the development of numerical methods for astrophysical simulations on high-performance computing facilities, complementing the research programs at HITS and Heidelberg University. The appointee must have a strong academic standing, showing internationally competitive research and high potential for future scientific impact. Conditions for appointment are a doctorate in physics or astronomy and (in accordance with Article 47, Paragraph 2 of the Higher Education Law of the Federal State of Baden-Württemberg) a habilitation or comparable qualification, as well as pedagogical aptitude. Duties at the Department of Physics and Astronomy include teaching and participation in academic administration.

Heidelberg offers a vibrant scientific community with the University’s Zentrum für Astronomie (ZAH), the Max-Planck Institute for Astronomy and the Max-Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics. The new group will be hosted by the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies – a private, non-profit, multi-disciplinary institute conducting fundamental research in several fields of natural sciences, mathematics, and computer science. It provides highly competitive resources to develop a high-impact research agenda. With its excellent computational infrastructure, HITS is especially well equipped for research focusing on numerical astrophysics.

Heidelberg University aims to increase the number of women on its faculty, hence specifically encourages qualified women to apply. Disabled persons will be given preference if they are equally qualified.

Applications with the usual documents (research statement, curriculum vitae detailing the scientific career, full publication list and a list of previous lecture courses and talks) are requested to be sent electronically only (pdf) by November 30, 2018, to Prof. Hans-Christian Schultz-Coulon, Dean, Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Heidelberg, Im Neuenheimer Feld 227, 69120 Heidelberg, Germany (dekanat@physik.uni-heidelberg.de).
