Jülich Supercomputing Centre grants 27 million core hours for Multidimensional Hydrodynamic Simulations of Stars

For simulations of physical processes in stars in the framework of project HWB07 “Multidimensional Hydrodynamic Simulations of Stars”, the PSO group was awarded 27 million core hours on the JUQUEEN supercomputer at Jülich Supercomputing Centre (Forschungszentrum Jülich). These resources, allocated for May 2017 to April 2018, will be used to perform simulations of convective burning processes and dynamical shear instabilities in stars with the Seven-League Hydro code developed by the PSO group.

Conventional stellar evolution calculations cover the entire lives of stars and are too challenging to be performed in a detailed multidimensional hydrodynamic treatment with current computational resources and methods. The goal of project HWB07 is therefore to perform such detailed simulations for shorter phases and isolated processes that are critical for the further evolution. Such simulations are still extremely demanding and require substantial amounts of computer time as well as innovative modeling approaches. Their results will help to improve the reliability and predictivity of stellar modelling.

About HITS

HITS, the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies, was established in 2010 by physicist and SAP co-founder Klaus Tschira (1940-2015) and the Klaus Tschira Foundation as a private, non-profit research institute. HITS conducts basic research in the natural, mathematical, and computer sciences. Major research directions include complex simulations across scales, making sense of data, and enabling science via computational research. Application areas range from molecular biology to astrophysics.
