PSO group supports workshop at the European Centre for Theoretical Studies (ECT*), Trento, Italy

5. June 2017

The PSO group at HITS supports the workshop “Bridging nuclear and gravitational physics: the dense matter equation of state”, which is hold at the European Centre for Theoretical Studies in Nuclear Physics and Related Areas (ECT*), Trento, Italy, from 5-9 June, 2017. After the revolutionary detection of gravitational waves from black-hole mergers, the community awaits the first measurement of neutron-star mergers. These events are of great interest for nuclear physics, since the detailed dynamics can teach us about the fundamental interactions and fundamental constituents of matter at very high density, which is only partially known. Any progress in understanding fundamental physics from astrophysical observations crucially relies on the interaction between the nuclear physics community and researchers in gravitational physics and astrophysics.  Thus, the workshop, which is co-organized by PSO member Andreas Bauswein, aims to foster collaboration between nuclear physics and gravitational physics.

About HITS

HITS, the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies, was established in 2010 by physicist and SAP co-founder Klaus Tschira (1940-2015) and the Klaus Tschira Foundation as a private, non-profit research institute. HITS conducts basic research in the natural, mathematical, and computer sciences. Major research directions include complex simulations across scales, making sense of data, and enabling science via computational research. Application areas range from molecular biology to astrophysics. An essential characteristic of the Institute is interdisciplinarity, implemented in numerous cross-group and cross-disciplinary projects. The base funding of HITS is provided by the Klaus Tschira Foundation.
