Monika Mondal – Journalist in Residence 2026
Indian science journalist Monika Mondal was the 14th Journalist in Residence at the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies (HITS) from February to July 2026.
Holding degrees in Electronics and Communication Engineering as well as Development Studies, she works as a freelance science journalist. Since 2020, her work has appeared in publications including Nature, Wired, The Guardian, and The Hindu. Her achievements have been recognized with, among other honors, a fellowship from the Pulitzer Center, the Alexander von Humboldt Chancellor Fellowship, and the Thomson Foundation Journalist Award.
During her residency at HITS, Mondal gave a public lecture on “The Catch 22 of Science and Development”. She also led an internal seminar for HITS researchers and recorded a video interview for the institute’s social media channels.
Reflecting on her time at HITS, Mondal said: “My time at HITS helped me look at both myself and my book project with fresh eyes and from a different perspective.”
About HITS
HITS, the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies, was established in 2010 by physicist and SAP co-founder Klaus Tschira (1940-2015) and the Klaus Tschira Foundation as a private, non-profit research institute. HITS conducts basic research in the natural, mathematical, and computer sciences. Major research directions include complex simulations across scales, making sense of data, and enabling science via computational research. Application areas range from molecular biology to astrophysics. An essential characteristic of the Institute is interdisciplinarity, implemented in numerous cross-group and cross-disciplinary projects.
