In April, HITS welcomed its current Journalist in Residence: Australian science journalist Jackson Ryan. He kicked off his six-month stay with an engaging talk at Heidelberg University in May. Here’s to a productive and inspiring residency!

Shaken and stirred – The first Martini User Meeting was “served” at HITS in February, led by Independent Postdoc Fabian Grünewald. The event brought together experts in biomolecular and soft matter physics to explore the Martini coarse-grained force field.

Bacteria have been around for billions of years – but how did they evolve? In our research section, learn about a recent study published in “Science,” where HITS alumnus Benoit Morel (formerly of the Computational Molecular Evolution group) helped map out key milestones in microbial evolution.

In this issue, we meet Visiting Scientist Lu Yang from the University of Minnesota. She shares insights into her work in statistical methodology, her collaboration with the Computational Statistics group at HITS, and how she enjoyed life as a visiting scientist in Heidelberg.

About HITS

HITS, the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies, was established in 2010 by physicist and SAP co-founder Klaus Tschira (1940-2015) and the Klaus Tschira Foundation as a private, non-profit research institute. HITS conducts basic research in the natural, mathematical, and computer sciences. Major research directions include complex simulations across scales, making sense of data, and enabling science via computational research. Application areas range from molecular biology to astrophysics. An essential characteristic of the Institute is interdisciplinarity, implemented in numerous cross-group and cross-disciplinary projects. The base funding of HITS is provided by the Klaus Tschira Foundation.
