With the start of the new Clusters of Excellence – DYNAVERSE and SynthImmune – HITS is participating in two major projects in astronomy and the life sciences.
In February, HITS welcomed this year’s Journalist in Residence, Monika Mondal (India). During her six-month stay, she will work on her new book project, lead internal workshops, and give a public lecture.
HITS research also tackles pressing societal questions: How accurately can earthquakes be predicted? Tilmann Gneiting (Computational Statistics) and his research group are investigating this question and putting probabilistic forecasting models to the test.
For an in-depth look at cutting-edge astronomical research, an interview with Kai Polsterer (Astroinformatics) provides insights into the goals of the DYNAVERSE Cluster of Excellence, highlights its scientific priorities, and explores how artificial intelligence aids in advancing knowledge.
HITS, the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies, was established in 2010 by physicist and SAP co-founder Klaus Tschira (1940-2015) and the Klaus Tschira Foundation as a private, non-profit research institute. HITS conducts basic research in the natural, mathematical, and computer sciences. Major research directions include complex simulations across scales, making sense of data, and enabling science via computational research. Application areas range from molecular biology to astrophysics. An essential characteristic of the Institute is interdisciplinarity, implemented in numerous cross-group and cross-disciplinary projects. The base funding of HITS is provided by the Klaus Tschira Foundation.
